Striar Hebrew Academy (SHAS) is hiring a school nurse manager. This is a part-time (approximately 30 hours/week), in-person position with some flexibility on the hours worked.
Job Responsibilities and Duties
In this role you will not only administer to the physical and psychological health of our community, but you will also manage our nursing and health service operations.
Nursing Responsibilities
- Establish a compassionate environment by providing culturally and linguistically relevant physical and psychological support for students and families
- Promote student independence by establishing student care goals; teaching and counseling student and family; and reinforcing their understanding of disease, medications, and self-care skills
- Provide information to students and health care team by answering questions and requests
- Conduct student health assessments, including health screenings
- Work collaboratively with contracted health educator, community partners, parents and students to design an age-appropriate, evidence-based, culturally and linguistically relevant health education program
- Work with contracted health educator to teach health education to students and provide up-to-date health information to their families; may offer health and/or first aid classes as appropriate
- Maintain student confidence and protects operations by monitoring confidential information
Nurse Manager Responsibilities
- Design and implement procedures, rules, and regulations that promote a safe and healthy working environment
- Manage daily operations and conduct long-term planning including policies and procedures, budgetary, and those related to staffing
- Maintain nursing staff, including recruitment and training, coordinating care, monitoring results, and coaching or disciplining nursing and auxiliary staff as needed,
- Assure quality of care by developing and interpreting school’s philosophies and standards of care; enforces adherence to state board of nursing, state nurse practice act, MA Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) and MA Department of Public Health requirements and regulations; measuring health outcomes against standards; making or recommending adjustments
- Protect students and school staff by developing and interpreting infection-control policies and protocols and enforcing medication administration, storage procedures, and controlled substance regulations
- Maintain documentation of student care services by auditing student records
- Achieve financial objectives by preparing an annual budget; scheduling expenditures; analyzing variances; initiating corrective actions
- Ensure operation of medical and administrative equipment by verifying and maintaining emergency equipment and evaluating new equipment and techniques
- Maintain nursing supplies inventory by studying usage reports, identifying trends, anticipating needed supplies, approving requisitions and cost allocations
- Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops from MDPH-approved trainers provided like the School Health Institute for Education and Leadership Development (SHIELD); attending all Regional and Statewide CSHS meetings; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies.
- Review students’ primary care provider, dental provider, and health insurance status regularly. Provides referrals and linkages to care to students and their families, ensuring referrals are consistent with CLAS standards
- Assist consultant with annual school health needs assessment; analyze results and modify health services in response as necessary
- Develop individualized student health management plans based on assessment findings and monitor student progress
- Other responsibilities as assigned by school administrators
Skills and Qualifications
- Bachelors degree in nursing or related field
- MA school nursing licensure
- Current license to practice as a registered nurse in Massachusetts
- At least two full years of employment as a Registered Nurse in a child health, community health, or other relevant clinical nursing setting
- Strong supervision skills
- Knowledge of medication administration
- Effective communication skills
- Ability to create a safe environment for staff and students alike
- Ability to exercise sound judgment
- Ability to work as part of a team
Details
- Salary range is $34 to $38 per hour, commensurate with experience
- We are looking for someone to work 4-6 hours per day and are flexible with timing; you can expect to work about 30 hours/week
- Benefits include paid time off, including national and Jewish holidays and early release Fridays
