School Aide 1:1
Akiba-Schechter Jewish Day School is seeking an 1:1 School Aide for a 2nd grade student to integrate completely into the classroom to support the specific student and, from time to time, the entire classroom. The Assistant must be attentive to the unique needs of the students and help identify solutions when students encounter challenges. The candidate should have strong interpersonal skills as they will collaborate with the student’s family, teachers, and administrators regularly to ensure that the student is optimally integrated into the classroom and thriving academically and socially. The ideal candidate believes in the ability of all students to learn and succeed and brings a positive, can-do attitude to their work. They are flexible, energetic, cheerful, patient, and self-directed, with strong judgment, decision-making, and problem-solving skills, keen attention to detail, and a demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism.
This is a full-time hourly position. Hourly wage will be $25-30, commensurate with experience.
Job Description
1:1 aide for a student with significant social/emotional and academic challenges.
This position is designed to help this student transition to Akiba-Schechter from a therapeutic school. The ultimate goal of this position will be to help the student integrate fully and confidently into the classroom.
A good candidate will recognize when the student needs support academically and socially and when he can be challenged to be more independent.
Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be responsible for effectively supporting student learning and behavior. Responsibilities will include:
- Assisting student in daily classroom activities, lessons, and socialization
- Implementing strategies to help the student maintain a well-regulated and safe body
- Assist in de-escalation tactics when the student becomes dysregulated
- Praise the student for pro-social and situationally appropriate behavior
- Praise student for hard work
- Communicate regularly with parents and faculty regarding the student’s progress towards specific goals
- Assist with transitions between classroom, lunch, recess, arrival, and dismissal
Qualifications
- College graduate or paraprofessional certification
- Extensive experience with ADHD and LD children
- Comfort and confidence implementing techniques to help the student stay focused and well-regulated
- Patience, kindness, good communication skills, openness to feedback
Preferred skills
- Wilson Reading Systems experience/training
- SLP or OT experience/training
- Special Education experience/training
- Graduate degree in social work, psychology, special education, or counseling
